power of red

We are all programmed to respond to colour. Colours can affect our mood, thoughts and emotions, so it is important that when we are designing logos and branding a company that we take into consideration all that colour can suggest. The choice of colour for your logo and your website design can have a significant impact on the way that potential customers view your company.

The power of the colour red

Red is a powerful and dynamic colour. It evokes strong emotions such as anger, passion, love, and even hate. It is also an attractive, energetic and powerful colour often used in logos of brands which want to be seen as exciting and energetic when selling products which appeal to the young: clothes, films, toys, sportswear etc.

red is exciting

It is nearly always used in graphics for clearance sale signs as it excites viewers, creates a sense of urgency and is therefore great to promote impulsive behaviour: Buy Now!
Shoppers are inclined to make snap judgments based on the influence of this colour.

Red is for sales

Because red is a bold colour that commands attention you might use red call-to-action buttons in your web design, to draw the eye to them and to encourage action.

Red is also believed to stimulate appetite and that is why it’s used by restaurants and food companies.  For example, the McDonald’s arches are yellow, which is fitting for a brand that focuses on children, playfulness and happiness. However, it also uses red as an accent colour to draw attention.

If you’re looking to have a really powerful presence or get someone’s attention fast, red is the go-to colour. However, use it sparingly to avoid the negative reactions it can so easily awaken. Remember that red is also used to suggest terror, such as in horror films!
