Time to celebrate? The browser “Internet Explorer” is being fazed out!
Internet Explorer has always been the bane of every web designer’s working life, not being standard-compliant, causing glitches in the display of web designs and adding hours of extra work to any project (particularly with IE6 and 7) to ensure that designs looked and worked the same across all browsers.
Although the recent versions of IE have been much improved, the news that this browser is being replaced in Windows 10 with a new browser called Microsoft Edge, seems like a reason to hang out the flags!
While Microsoft Edge is the replacement for Internet Explorer, Microsoft will keep its aging IE browser around for those who prefer to keep its familiarity.
All new versions of Windows 10+ will come with Microsoft Edge and this is therefore likely to become the default browser for many people for the future.
It is designed to be minimalist in presentation and will include new features like digital ink annotation, Cortana integration, and a built-in reading list.
It’s hardly surprising that Microsoft Edge is aimed squarely at the mobile market. According to netmarketshare.com, Internet Explorer has a 56% share of all desktop browsing, but only has a 2.05% share of the mobile browser market. It was not so many years ago that IE boasted over 90% of all online traffic , so this is possibly one of the key reasons why Microsoft decided to make the changes it has.
Only time will tell how standard-compliant the new browser will be and whether it will cause headaches for developers, but Microsoft’s video below shows some of the benefits of having it on your PC or mobile device.
