One of the most significant ways of promoting your website and your business on line at present is with social media.
Creating a Twitter or Facebook following can help to boost traffic to your site and encourage loyalty for your brand.
So you have set up your social media pages, but you are struggling to get many followers.
What’s going wrong?
5 things which will prevent you getting a good following in Social Media.

1) You are not updating your page often enough or, just as bad, you are updating it too often!
Try to update your Twitter, Facebook or LinkIn pages at least a few times a week and daily if you have the time. But don’t bombard followers with repeated messages every day so you become an irritaing voice they want to switch off.
2) Your messages are all too promotional. Social media is not about bombarding your followers with marketing
messages and “buy, buy, buy” posts. You should try to provide meaningful and useful content that your followers will find valueable. Top tips or links to blog pages with useful articles are a great idea. Don’t forget to make good use of the facility to include images… a picture tells a thousand words.
3) You don’t give your fans enough reasons to follow you. Whilst on the one hand, bombarding followers with marketing messages is a bad idea, on the other hand, most people do follow brands on business social media sites (rather than personal pages) to get deals or discounts. Make sure you do offer special offers from time to time. Target your offers to the audience you are attracting.
4) You do not interact enough with your followers. Social media is meant to be a social activity even when you are a business.
Do you ask or answer questions, retweet comments, thank people for following you? If the answer to these questions is no, then it is likely that followers will start to see you as a faceless company who is probably only interested in promoting their product or services.
5) You don’t bother promoting your social media pages. It is not sufficient to put up profiles on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc and expect people to flock to you. How do they know you are there? Make sure that you put “Follow us on” buttons on your website, add your profile url to your leaflets and your email signature… just get the word out there!
